Hodges Badge Company’s Core Value: Pride

The Core Value word of the month for July was PRIDE. Pride is an important core value for Hodges and is one of the values that we think consistently ranks our company, products, and service so highly by our customers and suppliers.
We celebrated the Pride core value this month with a “Decorate Your Department” contest.  Each department demonstrated department pride, team pride, company pride, or pride in the USA in very creative ways. Everyone in both plants celebrated the conclusion of the competition at a Sundae party and the department winner at each plant received a Core Values trophy and pizza coupon.
This Core Values trophy is now displayed proudly at each facility.
The competition was intense, but at lot of fun.  The judging was very difficult as you can see by the pictures below.
The Winning Decorations: Missouri Manufacturing Plant
The Winning Decorations: Rhode Island Manufacturing plant
We were absolutely amazed by the creativity and pride exhibited by all of the participating departments.  Many department presentations integrated pride in the USA with their pride in Hodges Badge Company and their departments in very unique ways.

Hodges Badge Company’s Core Value: Creative

We have had fun this month celebrating “creative”, our core value word for May and June.  Our Core Values team held two events, a fun fruit sculpture design contest and then a product design contest, which provided the opportunity for all Hodges associates to design an award product. We awarded over 100 trophies and ribbons!

Fruit Sculpture contest

We had over 30 fruit sculptures entered for this contest.  All winners received a custom Core Values ribbon and coupons for use at local businesses.  Everyone enjoyed the fruit after the contest.  Top sculptures included:

Banana Dolphins   ~  Watermelon Baby Carriage ~  Fruit Turtle ~  Apple Christmas Tree ~  Watermelon guy w/banana hair

Create a Product contest

This event was a phenomenal success, with over 70 individual and team entries!  Everyone was a winner that participated in this contest.  Custom participant ribbons were awarded for all entries and the winners of each category also received a trophy.  Categories included:

Most creative ~ Funniest/spoof ~ Best use of product ~ Best in show ~ Most economical ~ Most likely to be in a catalog

We also had a “People’s Choice” winner at each plant that was chosen from votes by Hodges associates.  Some of the winners are shown below.  WOW! We really unleashed some talent here.  We are planning a “Customer’s Choice” email for later in June.

A tip for celebrating your core values: Events like the Fruit Sculpture and Create a Product contests are fun, keep you core values visible, and engage as many of your teammates as possible in your core values discussion.

Kyle, Denise & Kathy’s 25th Anniversaries at Hodges !

25th Anniversary - Denise, Kyle, Kathy
Pictured Left to Right: Denise, Kyle, Kathy

We are fortunate enough to have employees that have stayed with us through it all.  To be specific out of our 155 employees, 38 of them have been with us for more than 20 years! That’s almost ¼ of our workforce!

This year, Kyle Trentmann,  Denise Balken and Kathy Schaffer celebrated their 25th anniversaries with the company in our Missouri plant. That’s pretty impressive since the average person changes jobs ten to fifteen times during his or her career.

We asked Kyle, Denise & Kathy a few questions to get a little insight on their journey at Hodges Badge Company! Here are their answers:

First a little background on them.

Kyle went to St. Francis Borgia High School. His dad was actually a business man working in Washington who heard about this new business coming to town. He didn’t exactly know what kind of business it was but Kyle put in an application and 25 years he’s still here.

Denise loves the people she has worked with over the past 25 years. Making lots of new friends and working along side such hard workers has made the people the favorite part of her job.

Kathy went to New Haven High School. It just so happened that when she was looking for a job, Lorraine the Hodges Plant Manager at the time was taking her driving test. As fate would have it Lorraine’s driving examiner was Kathy’s father. They got to talking about Kathy looking for a job. Well, Lorraine passed her test and Kathy got the job.

  • What was your first job at Hodges?

Kyle:  I ran the corder and rams. We only had 2 rams and 1 corder when I first started. (These are the machines essential to making our most popular flat ribbons like the point top and square top ribbon.)

Denise: Stapler in the rosette tops. (This is the first step in the handcrafting of our rosettes.)

Kathy: I was hired as the Rosette Dept. Supervisor but the factory had just started up so I had no one in my department at first, so I “welded” rims in the center of the rosettes.

  • What do you do at Hodges now?

Kyle: Hot Stamp Operator

Denise: Coach over the flat room ( The flat room is where the point top, square top and hemmed top ribbons are put together.)

Kathy: I’m the office administrator.

  • What have you seen change?

Kyle: Just about everything, especially technology

Denise: We have gone through being in separate departments to being in “cell” with someone from each department in a “cell”. (A manufacturing cell is a set of machines that are grouped by the products they produce to create a lean manufacturing process saving time and money.)

Kathy: The biggest change I see is the size of the orders. I remember when and order for 1,000 rosettes was large to us. Now we see order for 10,000 rosettes on 1 order.

  •  What have you seen remain the same?

Kyle: How we print & assemble the ribbons

  • Any memorable moments you’d like to share?

Kyle: Fresno, California, lots of hard work! Can’t say much more. What happened in Fresno will stay in Fresno. Ha! Ha! (Well… I CAN tell you that Kyle was part of the team that went to California to bring back the contents of Melrose Ribbons, a ribbon company that Hodges acquired in 2010 and yes that was a lot of work.)

  • Favorite thing about your jobs?

Kyle:  The challenges I face everyday.

Denise: Working along side all of the great workers we have!! Making lots of new friends.

Kathy: Knowing that the product we produce will most likely make someone happy.

  • Name 1 thing your coworkers would be surprised to know about you?

Kyle: I collect Hockey Cards & I have my original box cutter knife from when I started. (Ok now I’m doubly impressed – I lost the pen I got yesterday…)

  • Favorite thing to do on down time?

Kyle: Watch sports, play horse shoes and spend time w/ family

Kathy : Go camping, spend time w/ family and my dog Molly

 25th Anniversary (3)

Hodges Badge Company’s Core Value: Reliable

Image   Our Core Values team carefully selected this value as one of our cornerstone core values because this word represents our company culture in many ways.  What does reliability mean to Hodges associates and our customers?

  • You can rely on Hodges to deliver your awards on time for your event. We realize that your awards are critical to the success of your event and how important it is to deliver your awards to you on time to give you the time you need to receive your awards and relax a little before your event, knowing you have one less thing to worry about.
  • You can rely on Hodges for quality custom awards that you will be proud to award for presentation at any event or occasion. Pretty good isn’t very good at all. It needs to be the best it can possibly be. We work as a team the minute we get your order to meet or exceed industry standards and inspect our products every step of the manufacturing and packing process.
  • You can rely on Hodges to be experienced and professional in how we handle your order from start to finish. Great customer service extends well beyond the Customer Service department to the Art department, Manufacturing, Shipping, and Accounting. Your order will be processed and manufactured by employees that have years of experience and the training to create exceptional awards. Many of our Manufacturing employees have over 15 years of experience with Hodges.
  • You can rely on Hodges to keep our awards affordable. We have been practicing “Lean manufacturing” for over 10 years, and are fanatical about reducing waste and increasing value. Lean manufacturing has increased our reliability and helped us keep our awards very competitively priced.

A tip for celebrating your core values: Keep you core values visible and engage as many of your teammates as possible in your core values discussion – Use horizontal tape top ribbons to display your core values message.

Elaine’s 35th Anniversary at Hodges!

We are fortunate enough to have employees that have stayed with us through it all. To be specific out of our 155 employees, 38 of them have been with us for more than 20 years! That’s almost ¼ of our workforce!

This year, Elaine Anctil celebrated her 35th anniversary with the company! We congratulated her on this enormous accomplishment recently at a company awards event in our Rhode Island plant. Rick Hodges, President, and Jane Sousa, Vice President, presented Elaine with a commemorative plaque designed just for her by our art department. After the award presentation we celebrated with cake for everyone.

We asked Elaine a few questions to get a little insight on her journey at Hodges Badge Company! Here are her answers:

First a little background:

Elaine graduated from Westport High School in 1976 and three years later a former employer helped her find employment at Hodges. Elaine’s first job like a lot of employees was stapling rosettes. (This is the first step in the handcrafting of our rosettes.)

• What have you seen change?

When I first started working here Rick Hodges was a high school student. I have seen him grow up and come back to be the president of Hodges Badge Company.

• What have you seen remain the same?

In 35 years the assembly of the flat ribbons (point top ribbons & square top ribbons) hasn’t changed.

• Any memorable moments you’d like to share?

I can remember when Hodges Badge Co, Inc. reached its first million dollars in sales. Jim Hodges (Rick’s father) gave every employee a bottle of Champagne and a tin of real butter cookies.

• Favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is the variety. Throughout the course of a week or day even I perform so many different jobs. (Elaine has worked in our warehouse, our button department, our flat ribbon department, our rosette department, our medal department and more!)

• Name 1 thing your coworkers would be surprised to know about you?

I worked for my father and learned to be a mechanic.

• Favorite thing to do on down time?

My favorite things I do in my down time are spend time with my family, cross stitch and sew quilts.

So again Elaine – THANK YOU for 35 YEARS OF SERVICE, you are an important part of what has made Hodges Badge Company what it is today!

Hodges Badge Company’s Core Value: Team Work

Core-Values-Word-of-Month PosterThis month (March) we are kicking off our Core Values celebration and the word of the month is Team Work.

One part of consistently applying the idea of team work at the office in a fun and engaging way is to plan social gatherings. The gatherings can be during business hours (usually lunch time) or off site, sort of like the field trips that we used to have in school. These gatherings not only allow employees to relax a little and get to know one another but if anyone has ever put a party together or planned a trip for more than a few people they know it takes team work!

On March 4th, we had our Core Values Luncheon. It was just a coincidence (or was it?) that it happened on “Fat Tuesday” or Mardi Gras. I tried not to eat too much but lunch consisted of some tasty sandwiches from a local shop and it was topped off with a custom cake decorated with our very own Core Values. It’s amazing what you can do with frosting these days and who can resist cake to break up the work day.

DSC_0040As a special gift to close out the luncheon every employee received a light blue or white t-shirt with our Core Values printed on the front and sleeve. (March 28th is wear your company t-shirt to work day.)

All in all it was great break to the day; I was able to spend a little time with teammates I don’t always encounter during my daily activities and Rick Hodges gave a very inspirational speech to open the celebration.

Hodges Badge Company’s Core Values

Core ValuesHodges Badge Company has been a successful family owned and operated Awards Company for over 90 years.  In a recent team meeting, we had the opportunity to reflect on what has made this company what it is today.  Two factors were more evident than the rest – the Hodges “culture” and our people.  Our Hodges associates and our common “core values” are the defining factors that have made our company flourish for all these years.

The core values of our company have always existed, but have never been written down.  As we start our 94th year of operation, it seemed like an appropriate time to collect our thoughts about who we are and have been for nearly a century.  The first step was to assemble a Core Values team.  This team was composed of employees from all different departments, with different levels of experience, from both our Rhode Island and Missouri facilities.

Members of the Core Values team brought their own perspectives to this project and everyone within the company was encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences.  The team synthesized the Hodges history and our associates’ feedback into 7 core values.  We believe that these core values are what make us what we are.  Defining and communicating our core values is a way for us to celebrate our uniqueness as a company and our legacy.  Our 7 core values are:

  • Pride – Pride in the service and products we provide
  • Quality – Exceed customer expectations
  • Integrity – Establish, promote, and maintain high ethical standards in relation to our customers, team members, and the quality of our products
  • Teamwork – Cooperative effort
  • Reliable – We honor our commitments
  • Creative – Creating top of the line, one of a kind awards
  • Innovative – Achieve sustainability by diversifying our products and operations to adapt to new trends and meet evolving market demands

Over the next seven months we will be focusing on one of our core values each month.  We will be sharing how we celebrate each core value with a monthly blog post.  Please share your ideas and opinions with us as we begin this journey.  We invite you to celebrate with us!

My Personal Favorite New Dog Show Awards

Each catalog we strive to find new solutions for your awards. We just published our Dog Show Award Catalog (in March) with over 90 NEW products.

I wanted to tell you today about my personal favorite new dog show awards in the catalog.

My first favorite is our new vintage dog plaques. We actually have two versions: The “Best Dog” Vintage Award Plaque and the “Dog Life” Vintage Award Plaque.  Both plaques feature dog themed quotes, attractive backgrounds and are customizable with one of our AKC breed stock designs (200+ new full color designs). These make great awards and gifts for your volunteers!

dog-show-award-plaque-pf8110                       dog-show-award-plaque-pf8112

My second favorite product is the new Windsor Rosette. It offers something a little different from what is currently in our line of dog show rosettes. The Windsor Rosette features a ¾ rosette top made of hand sewn petals and three 12” streamers. Just like our other rosettes, you can still choose a button, gold rim, or satin center rosette center with your logo or a stock design, any ribbon color or combination of ribbon colors including exclusive multicolor side streamers and 10 lines of custom print. The Windsor Rosette can also be customized with up to 24” streamers to accommodate if you are looking for a larger rosette.

My third favorite product is actually not a product but a new option for our dog show trophies. We had our art department create a custom printed column that can go on any trophy with columns. It features a paw print design on a light green background and your choice of any AKC Dog Breed stock design. This is great for those shows exhibiting less common breeds not usually available in trophy tops. It allows you to customize the trophy specifically for your breed with a more generic trophy top.

So I’ve listed my personal favorites here but we have so many more new great products in this catalog. Go on-line, find your and let us know. We would love to get your feedback. Happy browsing!
